Watermarking and Scarring for Protection

Watermarking and Scarring:

2000 © Theophilus Britt Griswold

Visible watermarks are a fairly effective deterrent to most casual thieves. Marks can also carry useful contact information. Subtle use of transparent overlays of text are most common. The use of image filters to degrade/scar the art quality are also used by some.  Hidden watermarks can be used to attach copyright, contact information, web and database links, and then track them on the web. Recent pricing changes to these services from companies like Digimarc may make this a more attractive option for unobtusive contact information.

Shortcomings:
Degradation of the image viewing experience. Visual watermarks can be erased with some degree of difficulty, depending on the area being covered. Tracking hidden watermarks on the web will cost some money (currently $100/yr minimum). The thoroughness of the web search is limited to publicly indexable pages (database delivered pages do not automatically index), and hidden marks can be erased with extensive image manipulation or even replaced with specialized software.

Examples of three different visual watermark schemes and Digimark hidden watermark
A) Three varieties of visual watermarks to help identify ownership or a place of contact.

B) Watermarking to fully protect image data, and provide point of contact.

C) Example of Image scarring to discourage reuse, created with Photoshop filters.

D) Digimarc data hidden within an image is shown enhanced in the B&W image. Software with Digimarc reading capabilities show the "©" symbol in the window header (back window). Additional contact information is then revealed with a Digimarc reader plug-in or stand alone program.
