2000 © Theophilus Britt Griswold The .JPG and .GIF file formats create reduced file size for quick transmission by throwing out information from the original image. The proper degree of compression makes a good monitor image, but compression artifacts are enhanced in print media, again limiting the usefulness of the image. Use JPG settings of 30% to 50%, and GIF color palettes with 16 to 32 adaptive colors. Greyscale and black & white GIF images need only 8-16 colors of grey for screen presentation. The use of a limited greyscale palette can significantly reduce file size where there are large areas of flat color such as pen and ink drawings with a white background.
